Meet Max Haney, the Libraries’ Marketing and Communications Assistant Co-op

Earlier this month, we sat down with Max Haney, the Libraries’ current Marketing and Communication Assistant co-op, to talk about the first 10 weeks of the spring/summer co-op and what’s ahead for the next three months.

This interview has been edited for clarity and length.

Q: What attracted you to this co-op?

I really enjoyed the idea of working for Drexel and it struck me as very interesting to work for the university I attend. Going into my last year of co-op I heavily focused on applying to Drexel jobs, and I loved the idea of promoting the Drexel Libraries to fellow students.

Q: Describe a project that you have been working on as part of your co-op.

The easiest project to point to is definitely social media. During the interview for this position, I talked about how I had almost no experience with social media so it was one of the things I wanted to learn about. Creating social media content every week has helped me get a sense of what it means to create social media campaigns for an organization with things like how to make the posts short and catchy but still informative.

Q: What do you want to learn or gain experience doing over the last three months of your co-op?

I want to keep improving my writing skills. I wrote a lot of professional emails to potential donors during my last co-op but I didn’t write anything similar to social media posts and the news articles published on the Libraries’ website. I want to do more of the latter and grow my skillset. They have a completely different tone from my previous work which has been fun to learn.

Q: The marketing field is highly segmented, and there are so many areas you can specialize in. What has been your favorite area to work in so far?

I really like analyzing a target market or audience to find trends and figure out what they like because I’m definitely also a psychology major at heart. Figuring out how I can help specific people use what I’m promoting and how to best direct them to it is really interesting to me.

Q: Where’s your favorite spot on campus to spend your lunch break?

The Philly Pretzel Factory that just opened up inside PISB is definitely the go-to. I’ve definitely been going there a lot, and it’s probably where I'm going to go for dinner today.
