ORCID is an international, non-profit consortium of publishers, funders, research, and academic organizations that builds and maintains a registry of unique identifiers for researchers and scholars. ORCID iDs are persistent digital identifiers that distinguish scholars & researchers from one another. Over the last several years a number of grant and manuscript submission systems have adopted ORCID, providing researchers the opportunity to identify themselves with their ORCID iD.

Earlier this year a number of scholarly publishers announced that they will begin requiring ORCID iDs for, at minimum, corresponding authors during 2016. Publishers of note to the Drexel community who have signed on include PLoS, the Royal Society, IEEE, and the Science journals.

Some funding agencies have been requiring ORCID iDs since last year, including Autism Speaks, the Wellcome Trust, and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
